Although going on a trip abroad is so much easier thanks to the development in transportation and technology, it is becoming harder and harder for people to do so because of their conflicting work schedules. However, people can now experience such vacation indirectly through a TV show called “Youth over Flowers.”
Broadcasted every Friday on South Korea’s entertainment channel tvN, “Youth over Flowers” is a travel variety program created by a famous producer named Na Young-seok. It is a spin-off version of previous popular variety TV programs “Grandpas over Flowers” and “Sisters over Flowers.” The third season of “Youth over Flowers”, which started in January 1st, 2016, featured actors Jung Woo, Kang Han-neul, Jung Sang-hoon and Jo Jung-suk. The four members went a trip to Iceland in order to see the aurora from the cold Northern European country. Just like its previous seasons, it received massive popularity from viewers, achieving the average viewer ratings of 6.9%.
This particular season is popular because of the combination of the four actors who were friends since they were young and unknown. Their display of intimate friendship during the journey makes the public also sympathize with them as if they are traveling with their own close friends. Moreover, these actors earned the nickname four stones for their naïve and, at times, absent-minded behavior. Such humane qualities displayed by actors who were previously regarded to be flawless, along with their frequent conferences in times of trouble, allow the audience to laugh heartily at the realistic and comical trip shown inside the screen.
Also, this season gives the viewers a glimpse into Iceland, a Nordic island country between the North Atlantic and the Arctic Ocean, famous for its beautiful natural wonders full of ice and snow. It is especially famous for Golden Circle, which includes three big Icelandic attractions: Gullfoss Falls, the Geysir hot springs and Thingvellir National Park. Most importantly, the highlight of Iceland is the aurora, a beautiful natural light show in the night sky. Iceland is one of the few places where people can enjoy looking at the aurora. The four actors went to see the aurora in Vik, a small village in Iceland, and viewers were able to admire the natural spectacle in the screen with them.
After “Youth over Flowers in Iceland” is over, the next season will take place in Namibia, a country in southern Africa. Four young actors who played the leading roles in tvN’s popular drama “Reply 1988”, Ryu Jun-yeol, Ahn Jae-hong, Go Kyung-pyo and Park Bo-gum, were announced to star in the series.
