On Thursday, November 26, 2015, the 5th Zesty HAFS Concert was held at HAFS Gymnasium with the support of HAFS Student Council. It started at 3:00 PM, and continued for 2 hours. All of the second and first grade HAFS students were in attendance and appreciated excellent pieces of music performed by HAFS Philharmonic Orchestra and Concert Choir. The concert was mainly directed by Jung-Wook Kim, the music teacher of HAFS. It included several famous songs that most of HAFS students knew, making it easier for students to listen to.
The first order of the Concert was HAFS Philharmonic Orchestra performing ‘Symphony No. 5 in C minor, Op.67’, composed by Ludwig van Beethoven and ‘Pomp and Circumstance March, Op. 39 No. 1’ composed by Edward Elgar.
Next, the first grade student in the Humanities Department, Eui Jin Kim, sang Pansori, a Korean traditional dramatic song, ‘Love Song(사랑가)’ from Chunhyangjeon. This was the most impressive part of this concert because she had such a beautiful voice and it was very special and unusual for HAFS students to listen to Pansori right in front of their eyes.
The third order was the flute ensemble, playing highlights from musical ‘The Sound of Music.’ After, HAFS Concert Choir sang ‘Without Love (Joseph Martin),’ ‘Creation Will be at Peace (J.P. Williams/Anna L. Page),’ ‘Rock-a my soul (Traditional)’, followed by a student from the International Department, Sumin Kim, playing ‘Under the Double Eager (Josef Wagner)’ and ‘Libertango (Astor Piazzolla)’ on the accordion. It was an interesting performance because accordion is not an instrument that people listen to on a normal basis.
Following this, the music teacher teacher Ms. Soyoung Lee, played ‘Piano Cocerto No. 2 in C minor, Op. 18 (Sergei Rachmaninoff)’ and the HAFS Philharmonic Orchestra played highlights from “Jurrasic Park.” After, there was a piano quintet “Die Forelle (Schubert)” played by HAFS students and teachers.
HAFS Concert Choir and Philharmonic Orchestra wrapped up the concert by playing highlights from ‘Les Miserables’ and performing ‘The Beautiful People,’ the school song of HAFS. The students responded by giving a thundering applause. This 5th Zesty HAFS concert was a chance for students to relax and enjoy listening to great music, and free themselves from the academic stress of the final exam.
